Clinical Expert Interview with Susan Clinton, PT on Sensory Balloon Retraining for Bowel Dysfunction

In continuing my video series with clinical experts, I interviewed Susan Clinton, PT, DscPT, OCS, WCS, COMT, FAAOMPT (Yes, those are a TON of initials!!) regarding balloon training as a treatment for bowel dysfunction. Susan is well-known in our profession as an expert on bowel dysfunction, and her video definitely did not disappoint!

Curious about this treatment? Check out the interview below! If you want to learn more, here are a few research articles that mention balloon training as a treatment tool (this one and this one) Hope you enjoy!

  1. Thank you Jessica and Susan for such an informative video!! Where do you source the balloon equipment?

      1. Susan mentioned in your online interview to use a non latex non silicone based condom with the balloon…. what is the brand? I can’t find a non-latex condom that doesn’t use a silicone based lube.
        Thanks

      2. Sorry for missing this! I’m thinking latex would be fine if a person has no latex sensitivity. I’ll have to look to see condom availability

  2. Hi Jessica! Loved the video and it helped hone in on my skills as I am getting into balloon retraining. I do have a question for you about the product itself. We have found CMT has changed up the balloon and is now sourcing the product in-house. We noticed that this does not have a locking mechanism to be able to increase the pressure beyond 60 ml (this is our syringe size). We tried buying larger syringes but that didn’t work, are you having this problem? We have reached out to CMT as well as post on public women’s health sites but we are not getting a great answer. Any help would be great!

    1. Hi Susan,
I apologize for missing this comment previously! The balloons I have do have a locking mechanism, they just come in the box detached from the balloon (small plastic things you have to attach on). Did your have that? If you attach it, it works just the same as the others did. Let me know if that helps! All the best, Jessica
